What are Clear Aligners?
Clear aligners are an invisible and simple alternative to braces.
It’s a series of clear, custom-made, removable aligners that gradually straighten your teeth as you wear them, each aligner moving your teeth just a little bit at a time.
They’re practically invisible, so most people won’t even know you’re in treatment, they fit around your teeth perfectly, so are usually more comfortable than regular braces, and they’re removable, so you can eat whatever you like and clean your teeth normally.
There many different brands of clear aligners that Dentist use in Australia. Here at Dental at Keys, we use the brands that align that provide the best outcomes for our patients.
What needs to be done before putting on clear aligners?
Before doing anything, we need to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy. A complete dental check-up and all dental treatment needs to be completed. A history of good oral hygiene and healthy gums is also essential.
We need to take records of you to prepare the right treatment for your teeth. These records include photographs, x-rays and 3D Scans.
What to expect during clear aligner treatment?
- Your dentist will give you several aligners at a time, depending on your case. You will be required to wear your aligners all the time except when you are eating. Good oral hygiene is imperative when wearing the aligners as food will be trapped between your teeth and aligners more easily.
- The aligners can also sometimes temporarily affect your speech. But most people adapt quickly to wearing the aligners and it is rare that your speech would be impaired for an extended period of time. Practice speaking out load and in front of the mirror to help you get used to your new aligners. You may also experience a temporary increase in salivation or dryness of the mouth.
- Although they are fairly invisible, you can expect some people to glance at your teeth and ask, “What do you have on your teeth?”
- Your ‘bite’ will feel different from time to time while the teeth are in transition.
- It’s recommended that you wear the aligners 22 hours a day. They should be removed for meals only, brushing and flossing before re-inserting the aligner. If not worn for up to 22 hours a day, the corrective process will begin to reverse within a few hours.
- You should only leave your clear aligners in your mouth to drink water. Anything else you eat or drink (or smoking!) requires the removal of the aligners to prevent damage.
- Each clear aligner tray should be worn for roughly 1-2 weeks. Your dentist will let you know of your custom wear schedule.
